Size and selection
Tire markings provide key information about the size and structure of the tire. In a code such as 205/55 R16, the first number refers to the tire’s nominal section width, the second indicates the sidewall ratio, the letter R identifies radial construction, and the final number shows the wheel rim diameter in inches. Understanding these specifications helps you interpret the marking; it does not by itself confirm vehicle fitment.
Load and speed ratings are essential safety specifications for any tire. The load index indicates how much weight a tire can support, while the speed rating identifies the maximum speed capability under approved operating conditions. These values should always match or exceed the vehicle manufacturer’s original specifications to maintain safety, stability, and compliance.
The Tire Size Calculator converts the marking printed on a tire sidewall into theoretical physical dimensions. For supported formats, it shows the values that can be derived from that marking, including section width, rim diameter, aspect ratio and sidewall height, overall diameter, circumference, full revolutions per kilometre, and theoretical volume in litres. Safety and care
The correct tire pressure is set by the vehicle manufacturer, not by the tire itself. It can usually be found in the owner’s manual or on a label inside the driver’s door. Check pressure at least once a month and before long journeys, always while the tires are cold.

The DOT code helps identify when a tire was manufactured. The final four digits indicate production week and year — for example, the code 1524 means the tire was made in the 15th week of 2024. This information is useful when evaluating maintenance needs or replacement timing.
Proper storage helps preserve tire condition between seasons. Store tires in a clean, cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and chemicals.
Sidewall damage can indicate issues that require professional attention. Cracks, bulges, or cuts may affect structural integrity and should be evaluated promptly. Early inspection helps reduce the risk of unexpected tire failure.
Replacement and use
Summer, winter, and all-season tires are designed for different temperatures and driving conditions. Summer tires perform in warmer conditions, while winter tires retain their characteristics better in cold weather. All-season tires are a compromise for a broader range of conditions, but they do not fully replace dedicated summer or winter tires in demanding or extreme conditions. The right choice depends on climate, typical journeys, and driver needs.
Replacing all four tires at the same time provides balanced handling and consistent performance. When only two tires require replacement, factors such as wear levels and drivetrain configuration should be considered. A professional assessment can help determine the most suitable option.
Wheel balancing and alignment are important for tire wear and driving stability. Symptoms such as vibrations, steering drift, or uneven tread wear often indicate the need for inspection, as can a hard impact with a pothole or kerb. Routine checks can improve ride quality and protect tire investment.
Circumference is the theoretical distance a wheel covers in one rotation. A change in overall diameter therefore changes the distance travelled per wheel rotation. If the system has not been recalibrated, the speedometer and odometer calculate from the vehicle’s reference tire size: a taller tire causes lower indicated speed and distance, while a shorter tire causes the opposite deviation.
